BACKGROUND

Power Partners is a concept inspired by Sid Ridgley, CSP, and Past CAPS National President, that was further developed and implemented in 2007 by the CAPS Montreal Chapter. Its goal is to grow the Chapter and bring its members together.

CAPS Montreal hosts several Power Partners meetings each year, and the formula has proven to be an exceptional opportunity for all professional members to get together regularly to learn, share and grow, specifically:

  • Learn from others
  • Share with others
  • Grow our businesses and our Chapter (and, creating a sense of Belong…ingwithin the CAPS community)

EFFORT REQUIRED: Requires 3-5 members per group

TIME REQUIRED: 2-3 hours

HOW DOES IT WORK? In order to gain the full benefit to oneself and provide value to the other members, attendees must do two things to prepare for a Power Partners meeting:

  1. Prepare a 'burning question' related to their businesses on which they would like advice from their fellow Chapter members; and

  2. Contribute a resource of some sort that will be valuable to the group.

FORMAT: The format of a Power Partners is flexible, but it always has a defined structure. One person volunteers (or is asked to) moderate the session and lead the discussions.

The Power Partner then generally follows one of the following formats:

  1. It starts with a "roundtable", which consists of opening comments and a speed exchange; or

  2. A specific topic related to the speaking profession is discussed among the members.

Regardless of which of these two formats is used, the group is then broken into smaller groups (3-4 people), for a period of approximately 30 minutes to discuss their 'burning question.' After this period is over, they switch groups again. This gives everyone the opportunity to share in the "collective brainpower" of their colleagues and help them focus on whatever challenge or project is important to them and for which they would like to receive feedback. The session wraps up with the whole group reconvening in a roundtable speed session, where everyone shares their key takeaway(s).

Another variation of the Power Partners format that has been successfully implemented is one where members give short presentations related to their business (i.e. their sales pitch, a 5-minute company description, practice for the "Rising Stars" at the annual convention, etc.), and then receive valuable feedback and suggestions from Chapter members on how to improve it.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POWER PARTNER MEETING AND A MASTERMIND GROUP?

Power Partners has a collective identity. We get to know each other, and each other's businesses, for more directed help and cross-referrals. It has been an exceptionally successful formula for all speakers who have participated, as well as for the Chapter’s identity.

PAST ATTENTDEE TESTIMONIALS

"In the 11 years since I’ve been a member of CAPS, the Power Partners concept has worked so well for the CAPS Montreal Chapter that it has been a constant in our programming, with at least 2 Power Partners per year. It’s effective for several reasons: It allows us to get insights and ideas in regards to where we are and what we need in our business; it allows us to benefit from the deep and varied expertise of our fellow members in a mastermind format; and it allows us to better understand the businesses of our fellow members, which often results in offers of help, collaborations, referrals – and friendships. Beyond that, the ability to share our vulnerabilities and challenges has the beautiful effect of building deeper relationships with each other – which is what the CAPS family is all about! The joint Power Partners with the Ottawa chapter in 2009 was one of my first CAPS meetings that I attended, and besides the fact that the combined brainpower of all the people in the room nearly blew my mind, it had an absolutely profound effect on how I viewed the value of CAPS, and the generosity and brilliance of the people within it. The opportunity to have this Power Partners experience with another CAPS Chapter is not to be missed. If you have a chance to go to this event, then GO! (and I’ll see you there).”

- Suzannah Baum, 2009 Joint Power Partners participant

"Power partners is truly an event where you can get a tremendous amount of value that is immediately applicable to the specific challenges that you are experiencing. The structure of a Power Partners event allows each participant to get the individualized attention that they are seeking. A Power Partners event is a collection of some of the brightest and most creative business people that you are likely to find in your professional world. Apart from renewing existing relationships with colleagues, there is the opportunity to meet new thought leaders on a personal and professional level. Attending a Power Partners event gives you access to a brain trust that can help give you the business insight you need for where you are specifically in your business. The people that attend are also the people that you want access to in your business. Consider the event a mastermind group that is project oriented on dealing the very specific needs of each participant. Not only is it a cost-effective way of propelling your business forward, it is just one of the best ways to invest in your business. And, you just might have some fun too!!”

- Paul Frazer, 2009 Joint Power Partners participant
