Event description

Description

Practical Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Skills in Non-Mental Health Settings

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been recognized as an effective and evidence based therapeutic modality for the treatment of mental health. Poor physical health can lead to an increased risk of developing mental health problems, and similarly, poor mental health can negatively impact physical health, leading to an increased risk of some physical health conditions. This module will use case-based learning to teach participants when to apply CBT principles in their work for managing patients with co-occurring mental and physical health conditions through using an integrative and comprehensive approach. Training related to prioritization of what is important when using CBT skills, how to initiate CBT principles and where to access online CBT resources will also be included. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to practice the skills introduced by facilitators.

Who should register?

The MP3C modules are designed for all healthcare providers (i.e. nurses, physicians, social workers, occupational and physical therapists, primary care, etc.), as well as managers and administrators in primary care, hospital, long-term care and community care settings who are working with patients and families to address complex care needs, with a particular focus on co-existing mental and physical needs.

About the Medical Psychiatry Collaborative Care Certificate

As part of a new approach to the education of health care providers, the Medical Psychiatry Alliance (MPA) is offering the Medical Psychiatry Collaborative Care Certificate (MP3C), a continuing education program to support learning in integrated mental and physical collaborative health care. The program aims to provide education resources for health care providers who would like to be better equipped to assess and manage patients with co-existing mental and physical health needs.

The assessment, management and prevention of integrated mental and physical health remains a challenge in our health care system. Health care providers and their teams are faced with increasing complexity of patients with co-existing mental and physical health needs as a common, clinical issue in daily practice. To address these needs, the MP3C will provide innovative and accessible education for practicing health care providers across health care sectors and patient populations.
