Event description

Description

Join us for a webinar on legal cases related to occupational exposures to carcinogens, taking place on April 23, 2019. The goal of this webinar is to provide practical tools for law and labour professionals working on occupational cancer cases within the workers compensation system in Ontario. Professionals working on these cases face unique challenges, including: 1) meeting the legal test for causation; 2) having the skillset to seek out, understand, and apply scientific literature to casework; and 3) retrospectively collecting exposure histories. Legal professionals working outside of Ontario, as well as non-legal professionals such as occupational hygienists and exposure scientists, are also welcome to attend. There will be ample time for questions and discussion.

The webinar will be presented by CAREX Canada in partnership with the Industrial Accident Victims’ Group of Ontario (IAVGO) Community Legal Clinic, the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers Inc. (OHCOW), and the Ontario Office of the Worker Advisor (ON-OWA). Together, we will:

  1. Discuss relevant lung cancer case studies within the workers compensation system in Ontario from legal clinic and advocate perspectives
  2. Share CAREX Canada resources and expertise on occupational exposures to known and suspected carcinogens
  3. Assess future opportunities for support and training on occupational exposures and legal cases

This webinar may also be eligible for substantive hours of professional development for lawyers and paralegals who are licensed with the Law Society of Ontario. Please visit the Law Society of Ontario website for more information.

The webinar will be recorded and posted as an online video with the purpose of sharing the content more widely. Attendees will not be identified in the recording, and the question and answer period will not be included.

Speakers include:

  • Cheryl Peters, PhD: Co-Principal Investigator of CAREX Canada, Research Scientist at Alberta Health Services, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary
  • Maryth Yachnin, J.D.: Staff lawyer at IAVGO
  • Dave Wilken, LL.B: Chief Operating Officer at OHCOW
  • Laura Vurma, LL.B: Legislative Interpretation Specialist at ON-OWA
  • Anya Keefe, MSc: Occupational exposure expert and independent contractor for CAREX Canada

Background:

  • IAVGO is a community legal clinic in Ontario that provides free legal representation to injured workers, including workers exposed to carcinogens in the workplace
  • OHCOW was established by the Ontario Federation of Labour and is funded through the Ontario Ministry of Labour. It provides occupational health services and information for legal clinics, including research services to investigate and report on illnesses and injuries.
  • ON-OWA is an independent agency of the Ontario Ministry of Labour that provides free and confidential services in workplace insurance matters and on occupational health and safety reprisal issues. It also engages in community partnerships with groups that assist injured workers.
  • CAREX Canada is a national surveillance project that estimates the number of Canadians exposed to carcinogens in workplace and community environments
