We invite you to join us in “Women in Technology: Attracting, Retaining and Promoting Diverse Talent” to explore strategies for advancing diversity in the technology sector, critically analyze the culture that has supported a foundation of inequality therein, and engage in multidisciplinary dialogue about the value of creating more space for women and other under-represented groups in technology.
Gender and Bias in Algorithmic Design
Speaker: Dr. Cathy O'Neil
Author, Weapons of Math Destruction
Dr. Cathy O’Neil is the author of the blog mathbabe.org and several books, including Weapons of Math Destruction. She was the former Director of the Lede Program in Data Practices at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Tow Center, and was employed as the Data Science Consultant at Johnson Research Labs.
O’Neil attended UC Berkeley as an undergraduate, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University in 1999, and afterward held positions in the mathematics departments of MIT and Barnard College. She left academia in 2007, and worked for four years in the finance industry.
Weapons of Math Destruction was nominated for the 2016 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
There will be a networking reception following the lecture.
