Description

TD PRESENTS: Victoria Pride Society’s Pride in the Word is Canada’s largest Pride festival literary event. Each year it showcases both some of proudest and most talented writers from Victoria and across the country.

Featuring: Adele Barclay | Jillian Christmas | Brett Joseph Grubisic | Robin Stevenson | Beni Xiao | with special guest Ivan Coyote, and your host Billeh Nickerson

Ivan Coyote is the author of eleven books, the creator of four short films, six full-length live shows, and three albums that combine storytelling with music. A longtime Pride in the Word favourite, Ivan will be reading from their new book Tomboy Survival Guide, which was named an American Library Association Stonewall Honour Book. This Fall Ivan will be given an Honorary Doctorate of Laws at Simon Fraser University for their writing and activism.

Adèle Barclay’s debut poetry collection, If I Were in a Cage I’d Reach Out for You, (Nightwood, 2016) won the 2017 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize at the BC Book Awards. She is also the recipient of the 2016 Lit POP Award for Poetry and the 2016 Walrus Readers’ Choice Award for Poetry. She recently completed her PhD at the University of Victoria, and is Critic-in-Residence for Canadian Women in Literary Arts. She is a proud feral femme, and lives just a short sea plane ride away in Vancouver.

Jillian Christmas lives on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam people, where she is Artistic Director of Versəs Festival of Words. An enthusiastic organizer, Jillian focuses her energy on increasing anti-oppression initiatives in spoken word. She has worked in partnership with the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Opera, and more, performing and facilitating workshops across the country."

Vancouver-based Brett Josef Grubisic teaches at UBC's Department of English. The author of essays, short stories, and books (including three novels: The Age of Cities, This Location of Unknown Possibilities, and From Up River and For One Night Only), he's also been reviewing books and interviewing writers for decades.

Robin Stevenson is an award winning Canadian author of twenty novels for kids and teens. Her nonfiction book Pride: Celebrating Diversity and Community is a 2017 Stonewall Honor book, and has been nominated for numerous awards including the Sheila A. Egoff Award at this year’s BC Book Awards. She lives in Victoria with her partner Cheryl, their son Kai, and their cats, Noah and Mojang.

beni xiao was born and raised in the Toronto suburbs but now resides in Vancouver. Their work has appeared in Room Magazine and they have also been featured by Sad Magazine, Can't Lit, and the Real Vancouver Writer Series. In their spare time they like to scream and get bad grades in school. Beni is very gay and also very excited to share a space with you.

Billeh Nickerson is the author of five books including the City of Vancouver Book Award nominated Artificial Cherry. He is also a founding member of the performance troupe Haiku Night in Canada, and a silver medalist at the Canadian Gay Curling Championships. He lives in Vancouver, but kissed his first boy in Victoria. He has lost count of how many times he has hosted Pride in the Word. It’s by far his favourite event in the country.
