Dear Princeton Alumni, Parents and Friends:
Please join us on Thursday, October 8, 2015 for our Annual Princeton Alumni Dinner.
Professor Kinohi Nishikawa of the Department of English will give a talk entitled African American Literature by Design:
How do we read race in literature? Critics tend to respond to this question by focusing on patterns in content, or theme, and “voice,” or style: black authors write about certain things in especially distinctive ways. But can the full scope of racial meaning be contained “in” a text? This talk suggests that book design has played a significant but overlooked role in shaping readers’ perceptions of blackness over the twentieth century. By drawing our attention to the visual and material dimensions of racial meaning, Professor Nishikawa will cast a fresh perspective on the black canon and advances a “sensate" understanding of readers and their books.
