Before Renny Harlin became a household name directing action blockbusters like CLIFFHANGER (and my personal favourite: THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT), he received his first break by directing horror films and PRISON was his 2nd feature (1st US feature) and displays a different style of directing seen in most of films as he focused more on atmospheric set pieces, rather than over-the-top action beats.
PRISON is a horror film that takes place in a state prison where an inmate is framed for murder by a sadistic warden (Lane Smith) and is sent to the electric chair — only to come back from the dead to seek his bloody revenge on the warden, prison guards and even all of the clueless inmates (who had nothing to do with the wrongful execution). Ridiculously entertaining set pieces and kills ensue.
It's shocking to see such a mainstream horror feature go under the radar when the similar cult slasher, SHOCKER debuted on the big screen just a year later. The film also had a surprisingly low budget and it’s impressive that the slasher was able to appear far more mainstream than it really was — and a huge part of that was due to the gory practical effects and its cast including Viggo Mortensen, Tommy “Tiny” Lister, Tom Everett and Kane Hodder as the relentless villain.
I would highly recommend to this film for most horror fans who are seeking underseen hidden horror gems on the big screen! - SERENA WHITNEY (Programming Director)
