About Our Topic: Privacy at the 49th Parallel - Mitigating Risks to Privacy and Data While Crossing the Border

The border between Canada and the United States has more than 100 land crossings staffed by 10,000 Canadian border guards who scrutinize more than 52 million travelers entering and leaving Canada each year by road, rail, water, and many of the 100,000 scheduled commercial airline flights per day worldwide.

Traveling to and from Canada is often easy and routine, but recent developments in domestic and foreign laws and policies present new risks for travelers entering and leaving Canada.

International data sharing to technological developments are among the many sources of information that border guards can leverage to examine our personal, corporate, confidential and competitive information as we enter and leave Canada.

Learn about modern privacy risks at the border, how far your data travels without you, and what you can do to preserve privacy, meet professional and legislated obligations, and safeguard digital data.
