Project Mapleseed Information

Project Mapleseed is a non-profit, 100% volunteer run organization committed to helping preserve Canada’s firearms heritage by delivering safe and effective rifle marksmanship training to Canadians coast-to-coast. We are a “grassroots” organization founded by a group of passionate firearms owners and marksmen who recognized the lack of fundamental marksmanship training in Canada. Our goal is to provide access to affordable and effective training in the basics of marksmanship. These basics will assist participants in establishing a solid foundation as they continue to pursue their recreational or competitive shooting goals.

Project Mapleseed uses a 25-yard/meter distance and scaled targets to simulate engaging targets from 100-400 yards in standing, sitting/kneeling and prone positions. We follow a strict curriculum that breaks down the fundamentals into its key components, starting with range safety and safe firearms handling.

The objective of the course is to develop the basic rifle marksmanship skills needed to effectively engage a 4 MOA target reliably in prone position. This is equivalent to striking a 20” target at 500 yards. The points of instruction are delivered using a combination of classroom, dry fire and live fire exercises, followed by qualification testing.

Throughout the day, participants are given ample opportunity to refine their skills through practical experience and instructor-supported corrections. The final third of the day is spent in practical exercises and in shooting marksmanship qualification

tests. The objective of the test is to validate the participant’s successful adoption of the marksmanship lessons. Participants who score 210 or more out of a possible 250 earns the shooter a Project Mapleseed Rifleman patch.

Project Mapleseed can provide all the necessary equipment and supporting material to promote and manage the event, including targets, target stands, safety equipment and personnel. However, we would prefer to use the ranges’ existing target stands in order to ensure that we comply with local range rules.

We use a proven methodology of safe and structured rifle marksmanship instruction developed over the last 11 years in the United States by the Project Appleseed program. Project Appleseed holds over 1000 events per year and trains approximately 10,000 shooters per year in the United States.

A typical Mapleseed event requires four basic areas to operate:

1) Target/Firing Area roughly 30 yards long and 20 yards wide to accommodate 12-16 participants on shooting mats.

2) “Classroom” and Administration Area roughly 20 yards wide by 10 yards deep. This will be initially used for registration and then for the various points of instruction throughout the day as well as break/lunch areas. Popup canopies will be erected if shade is not available.

3) Parking Area – with room to accommodate 10-15 cars without impinging on local roads and access rights.

4) Restroom facilities –Access to basics sanitary services for the Mapleseed participants is mandatory.
