Description

DATE: July 22 from 10 am to 4 pm. With multiple breaks and fun filled activities!

LOCATION - Jim Green House Studio

Facilitated and presented by Rohit Chokhani

Eligibility - This workshop is part of an initiative primary meant for South Asians, however, no one who feels marginalized or wants to participate will be turned away. If you do not consider yourself part of the dominant culture due to your race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, caste, class or any reason similar to that then you are eligible for this workshop. What we do not want is a room full of privileged dominant culture well-funded participants. You decide for yourself whether you are eligible or not.

Detailed Description:

Everyone needs to write grants whether you like it or not. Is this something that you absolutely hate doing? Is this something you have no idea where to begin? Is this something that bores you?

In this workshop - We get into the philosophy and creativity of Grant Writing, How to find inspiration in it, How to get better at it and how to get positive results. I used to absolutely hate writing grants when I first started writing them. Right now I find writing them as exciting as actually performing or being on stage. Over the last few years, I have successfully written grants as an artist, professional and had successful results as in individual. I have also written grants for small and new organizations/collectives to huge large scale organizations.

As a person of color and/or person from any marginalized community - It is daunting to find one's voice in a funding system that is very Eurocentric or targeted towards a big gets better mechanism. Do you feel the Jury, the system, the past results etc are all against you or not created with guidelines and systems that marginalize your work and systems? I felt this way and continue to feel this way while writing grants. So we will also spend time in this workshop on how to make this reality favor your results and still inspire and motivate you to write that grant and face those systemic barriers and turn them upside down and make them work for you.

We will also discuss the specifics of recent funding changes and go over resources for writing better grants, tricks of the trade never found in books and specific links for funding sources and where there is money to be made by applying. We will take up to 40 participants for this free workshop. Please register only if your probablity to show up is 90-100%. It is a free workshop but that does not mean you claim a spot and not show up. By doing that you are wasting a free opportunity for someone else.
