Event description

Description

ProtoTO is Toronto’s tabletop game design convention. Held annually, this convention offers experienced and emerging game designers the opportunity to test out their designs over the course of a weekend.

From Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1, 2017, designers will test out their tabletop games and receive feedback from playtesters. Designers will get 6 hours of playtesting, broken down into three 2 hour sessions. There will also be presentations by local designers about game design and how to make the most out of playtester feedback. BoardAgain Games will, once again, provide the convention's extensive game library which will be available to all attendees during Open Gaming. And, all attendees will get a free raffle ticket to enter to win one of many great prizes! (There will also be tickets for sale at the event)

The weekend-long convention will kick off on Friday evening with a talk by Scott Nicholson entitled "Making Games to Change the World." Dr. Nicholson is the director of the Game Design and Development program at Wilfrid Laurier. He was the host of Board Games with Scott, the first board game series on YouTube, from 2005-2010, and is the designer of Tulipmania 1637 and Going, Going, Gone.

The presentation will be followed by a Games Showcase where all designers will set out the prototypes they will test over the weekend. Playtesters can sign up for the games that interest them and publishers will get a chance to meet the designers and get an overview of all of the prototypes.

On Saturday and Sunday, designers will test out their games and get feedback from playtesters (see full schedule below).

Ben Rosset and Alex Corrao from Panda Game Manufacturing will present "A Crash Course in Game Manufacturing" on Saturday morning and publisher Scott Gaeta will present "How to Turn Your Gaming Passion into a Gaming Career" on Sunday morning.

The weekend will wrap up with a presentation by veteran tabletop designer Sen-Foong Lim called "Yes, And... " In this talk, Sen will speak about how designers can approach the feedback they receive from playtesting.

Throughout the weekend, there will be raffle draws for many great prizes!

“Making Games to Change the World” with Scott Nicholson

Games can be used for more than recreation – they can be used to change the world. Games have been used for training, education, building empathy, and changing behaviours. At Wilfrid Laurier University in Brantford, Dr. Scott Nicholson helps students learn how to make games with real-world outcomes. During this session, Scott will present the highlights of that program, helping game designers better understand the potential marketplaces for games with real-world outcomes, the differences in designing a serious game from designing a recreational game, and help designers think about the potential impact of both gamification and game-based learning on players.
