Description

Acceptance, Mindfulness, and Behaviour Change in persistent/chronic Pain

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that has been applied to a wide range of psychological and behavioural symptoms associated with a number of mental and physical health conditions. Over the past decade, ACT has developed a robust evidence base, with over 10,000 research participants having taken part in over 200 RCTs. Participants with persistent pain are the most represented group in these studies. Consequently, the application of ACT principles to persistent pain and other physical health conditions has grown steadily and a range of professional groups are incorporating these principles in their clinical practice.

This is a two-day course that will introduce participants to the cutting edge behavioural science and practice of ACT with a particular emphasis on learning accessible and practical skills and techniques to address the psychological and behavioural barriers to recovery in persistent pain.

Target audience:

The course is aimed at all health-care professionals involved in the treatment of people with persistent pain.

The course will mix a range of learning methods including didactic lecture, audio-visual presentation, experiential exercises, group discussion, role play, and live demonstration.

Course content:

  • Evidence base for ACT
  • Context for using ACT in chronic pain
  • Functional contextualism, behaviourism, and relational frame theory
  • Introduction to the ACT model of chronic pain
  • Assessing and formulating yellow flags
  • Using patient’s values to inform goal setting
  • Acceptance, mindfulness, and behaviour change techniques for use in routine practice

Light refreshments will be provided, but participants will need to provide their own lunch.
