Event description

One of the most important responsibilities of municipalities is the development of the Official Plan. In Ontario, the Planning Act describes how land uses may be controlled, and the Provincial Policy Statement (PPS) provides overall policy direction for land use planning and development. However, each municipality has its own Official Plan that shapes the quality of the built environment. The Official Plan can have far reaching impacts on conditions that relate to obesity, heart disease, mental health, social isolation, nutrition and air quality. Thus, it is vital that public health units work with municipalities and community partners to ensure that the Official Plan supports healthy communities and reduces health inequities.

In this webinar you will:
• Learn about new provincial planning policy and its potential to support healthier communities
• Learn about new opportunities for public health to influence official plans
• Hear an example of how public health staff are working with planners in rural and urban contexts to update official plans
• Share your experiences of public health engaging in official plan reviews and updates
