About this event

From 17 to 19 June 2020, the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa will hold the fourth biennial Public Law Conference, co-organised by the University of Ottawa, the University of Melbourne and the University of Cambridge. The conference theme is ‘Public Law: Rights, Duties and Powers’. The Public Law series is the pre-eminent regular forum for the discussion of public law matters in the common law world. The 2020 conference will feature approximately 80 speakers, including leading judges and scholars drawn from across the common law world.

Program Overview

The conference begins on the afternoon of Wednesday June 17, 2020 at the centrally-located Library and Archives Canada with a plenary session on “Public Law in Mixed Systems”, featuring Rt Hon Richard Wagner (Chief Justice of Canada), Hon Kate O’Regan (Director, Bonavero Institute, Oxford) and Hon James Wolffe (Lord Advocate of Scotland). A buffet dinner reception in a marquee outside the Supreme Court of Canada follows.

On June 18 and 19, there will be two full days of plenary and parallel sessions, beginning on the morning of June 18 with a keynote session featuring Rt Hon Helen Winkelmann (Chief Justice of New Zealand) and Hon Sheilah Martin (Supreme Court of Canada).

Full registration includes the opening buffet dinner reception; and morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch for both full days of the conference.

On the evening of June 18th, a reception and three-course dinner will take place at the All Saints event space, a restored Anglican church and building of national historical significance, three blocks from the conference venue.
