Event Details

What should we do with our City's waste in the future? Join us at a Public Meeting - help shape Toronto's Long Term Waste Management Strategy

The City is developing a Long Term Waste Management Strategy for Toronto that will provide a framework for solid waste management decisions over the next 30 to 50 years. How should we manage our remaining garbage even after reuse, recycling, and composting? Our goal is to find solutions that are cost-effective, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable.

Meeting Format and Focus: Open house starts at 6:30pm, presentation at 7pm followed by facilitated table discussions and feedback opportunities.

  • Learn about the Waste Strategy - where we've come from, where we are now and where we're going.
  • Participate in a series of facilitated discussions - provide input on the options being considered and the criteria that will be used to evaluate them.

City of Toronto's Long Term Waste Management Strategy

Following two years of extensive work, the City of Toronto's Long Term Waste Strategy was approved by City Council on July 15, 2016. This comprehensive strategy will guide waste management in Toronto for the next 30-50 years. The new Waste Strategy puts priority on reducing waste and minimizing the amount sent to landfill. It emphasizes the importance of community engagement and encourages prevention of waste, maximizing its value before disposal and supporting the move towards a circular economy. Program implementation planning is underway.
