Putting Reconciliation into Practice: For leaders of academia and research

The program is a professional development opportunity for organizations and executives across sectors to explore in-depth how reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples can be put into practice. Starting on Feb. 10, this offering of the program will be tailored to leaders in the post-secondary and research sector and those working in academia, post-secondaries, research organizations and others are invited to join.

The program focuses on building a better understanding of Indigenous history and experiences in Canada and explore best practices through a series of interactive sessions and discussions with guest speakers and Indigenous leaders with the objective to increase the participants capacity to plan and implement changes in their organization.

Over four modules, participants will take concrete steps towards building their own capacity to advance Reconciliation by:

• Improving understanding of Indigenous history and experiences;
• Examining strategies and best practices on the spectrum of engagement and co-development;
• Building relationships with Indigenous communities; and
• Establishing a common understanding and basis for moving forward.

Who Should Participate

The program is for executives, management teams and organizations in post-secondary and research-based organizations who seek to better understand how they can take concrete steps now to practice reconciliation.

The Program

The program will provide an opportunity for open discussion with Indigenous leaders, community and peers to learn from other’s lived experiences. Time will be dedicated to ensure that all participants have opportunities to interact with facilitators and one-another to share on-going learning.

Program Features

• Basics: Increase understanding of the history of the relationship with Indigenous peoples, Indigenous peoples’ perspectives, what reconciliation means, the past and present policy environment, as well as greater cultural competence and confidence.
• Practical: Increase understanding about how organizations and leaders can take Reconciliation forward in their own role and in their organization, and how participants can incorporate it into their everyday work. Provide practical tools to apply knowledge, processes and strategies in participants’ organizations.
• Leadership: Create a core group of change leaders for practicing Reconciliation and reflect on the role of each leader to advance reconciliation.
• Networking & Community Building: You will have the opportunity to engage with a group of peers working on complex questions and real-world leadership challenges. Through built-in group work and peer practice groups you will become part of a vibrant professional community.

The program will be offered virtually with the possibility of a visit to an Indigenous community on Feb. 24.

Refund policy:

• Three or more weeks before the event 100% refund minus 25% admin fee
• Two weeks before the event 50% refund
• Seven days before the event no refund
