About this event
Escarpment Labs will be hosting a hands-on, practical brewery quality control course on July 11th at North Brewing Company in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
This course will involve morning presentations covering the basics of beer quality control and setting up a quality control (QC) lab. The discussion will focus on learning aseptic techniques and creating aseptic environments including brewery sampling, plating beer samples for QC analysis on various agar media, how to use a microscope and haemocytometer for cell counts, creating sampling plans, and using sensory analysis as part of a quality program.
After the morning presentation, and a quick break for lunch (provided), the class will divide into small groups for one-on-one, hands-on instruction to practice agar plating, cell counts, and aseptic techniques. Additionally, each member will receive a workbook with practice questions focused on the contents of the course to reinforce the main learning objectives. Advice as to what equipment to purchase to set up and use a basic brewery lab will also be shared.
This course will be presented by members of our quality laboratory team, all of whom perform these tasks on a near-daily basis. The Escarpment Labs Team will also be available to answer your yeast, fermentation, and beer quality related questions!
From this course, you will learn how to:
- Get the right results by aseptically taking samples from tanks and brinks
- Make sure your yeast is healthy by performing cell counts and dilutions using haemocytometers and microscopes
- Find out what’s in your beer by plating yeast and beer samples on various media used commonly in the brewing industry
- Dial in your brewery consistency by calculating pitch rates using information collected from cell counts and viability checks.
Take-home items include:
- Guide for purchasing laboratory supplies
- Workbook and presentation slides
- Guide to identifying common brewery contaminants
- An EXCLUSIVE set of Escarpment Labs “Lab Gear” pins!
