Abstract

Quantum electronic solids such as high temperature non-stoichiometric perovskite superconducting oxides such as Y-Ba-Cu-O and Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O, 2D materials such as graphene, defective perovskites such as titania, graphene like materials such as hexagonal boron nitride (BN) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as MoS2 and TiS2 have been emerging as powerful instruments to design and innovate ultra-fast and super-performing opto-nano and micro-electro-mechanical devices since more than a decade.

This talk aims to give audience an insight into how QES is used towards fabrication and functionalization of ultra-sensitive and accurate electronic-, plasmonic- and photo-electro-chemical sensors for biomedical and environmental applications.

Biography

Dr. Yavuz completed his doctoral studies at the School of Mechanical, Materials and Mechatronic Engineering of University of Wollongong (Australia), Institute of Superconducting and Electronic Materials (Australia) and the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering, Preston-New South Wales. Dr. Yavuz previously worked as assistant and associate professors at Tohoku University (Sendai-Japan), Texas A&M University (College Station-US); and worked as principal engineer at Accelerator Tech Corp (ACT) (Bryan-Texas). Dr. Yavuz has been currently a full-tenured professor since 2004 in the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering Department, the founding director of the Nano and Micro Systems Lab (NMSL) at the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Waterloo (UW) and the Director of UW Collaborative Graduate Nanotechnology Program. Dr. Yavuz is a leading authority on interconnector design, fabrication and packaging for opto-nano/micro-electro-mechanical-systems (N/MEMS)-sensors; received prestigious awards for his work on superconductor electronics, including the British Council Partnerships for Excellence International, and the USA Pi-Tau-Sigma National Mech Eng Awards; founder of Texas A&M University Materials Sci and Eng Graduate Program (2003-4); currently serves as editor for journals of Results in Engineering (Elsevier) and guest editor for MDPI-Materials and MDPI-Sensors. Dr. Yavuz has presented 48 invited/keynote/plenary speeches at national and international conferences and workshops lifetime; has 8 patents and patent disclosures and applications; and published 3 books and book chapters, and 139 refereed journals and 152 conference papers lifetime. Dr. Yavuz has supervised 187 in total including 28 postdocs (PDF), visiting fellows and research engineers, 26 PhD and 46 masters and 87 undergraduate students including Waterloo Nanorobotics Group (UWNRG) as supervisor/co-supervisor since 1997 in design, fabrication and testing for nano and micro systems (Opto-N/MEMS) devices using functional materials.
