R2R OUTDOOR SUMMER FILM SERIES: HEIDI

The Reel 2 Real Film Festival for Youth is excited to come back for our Outdoor Summer Film Series for 3 Fridays in August!

Join us on our last evening on Friday, August 30th for a FREE outdoor screening of Heidi, at Ron Basford Park's amphitheatre (Granville Island) after sunset (9:00 pm).

Heidi is a beloved and best-selling book, written by Johanna Spyri in 1880. Eleven-year-old Heidi is an orphan, who is cared for by her Aunt Dete. When her aunt gets a job in Frankfurt, Heidi is taken to live with her mysterious grandfather in the Swiss Alps. She becomes friends with a young boy, Peter, and loves to go up the mountain with him and his goats. Then one day, she is whisked away by her aunt to a posh house in the city. A term of Heidi’s lodging and education is that she is expected to provide companionship to Klara, the lonely, wheelchair-bound daughter of a well-to-do family. The two girls soon become friends, and Klara’s grandmother awakens Heidi’s passion for reading. However, Heidi becomes homesick for the freedom of the mountains and her grandfather. Watch the trailer here!

THE FILM WILL BE SCREENED IN SWISS-GERMAN & GERMAN LANGUAGES WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES.

The screening will be preceded by FREE animation workshops at Performance Works, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Make your own animation using some wacky props and paper cut-outs! These animation workshops offer children and families the opportunity to spark a new shared interest and show off your story-telling skills!

Workshops include:

  • Pixilation - Get animated! Choreographed by the instructor, you will glide, disappear and fly through the air. This is a great introduction to special effects and stop-motion animation.

  • Objects in motion - Using everyday office and school supplies, kids will animate objects in new, interesting and imaginative ways.

  • Cut out animation - A variety of pre-fashioned and cut-out materials will be used to create characters and sets. In small groups, using video capture techniques, attendees will be taken through the steps of creating a short animation.

Free parking will be available from 6:00 pm onwards and accessible washrooms are on site. Bring a blanket, some snacks and enjoy the show under the stars!

PLEASE NOTE:

Seating in Ron Basford Park's amphitheatre is on a first come, first served basis, and no reservations are required to attend the outdoor screening. To secure a great spot, we recommend arriving by 8:15 pm. The film will start after the sun has set (approx. 9:00 pm). RSVP'ing does not guarantee a reserved seat in the park.

Why RSVP to this FREE, public event?

In the event of rain, we will move the screening inside Performance Works, where we'll have a seating capacity of 300 people. Priority seating at Performance Works will be given to those who RSVP on Eventbrite.

By RSVP'ing, you will also be entered to win a Family Pass to the 2020 Reel 2 Real Film Festival for Youth. We look forward to seeing you there!
