R2R OUTDOOR SUMMER FILM SERIES: KAHLIL GIBRAN'S THE PROPHET

We've got some exciting news to share: the Reel 2 Real Film Festival for Youth is launching an Outdoor Summer Film Series! We invite you to join us on Friday, July 13th for a FREE outdoor screening of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet, at Ron Basford Park's amphitheatre (Granville Island) after sunset (9:15 pm).

Inspired by the Lebanese-American poet's work, Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet is a wondrous and richly-animated adaptation of one of the most recognized and best-selling volumes of poetry of all time. A passion project of producer-actor Salma Hayek, the film's animation team is headed by Roger Allers (The Lion King) and showcases the work of nine internationally acclaimed and independent animators, including Tomm Moore (Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner) and Nina Paley (Sita Sings The Blues). Watch the trailer here!

The screening will be preceded by FREE animation workshops and VR demos at Performance Works, from 5 pm to 9 pm. Come and check out a selection of NFB’s finest virtual reality pieces and treat yourself to groundbreaking, immersive experiences created by renowned Canadian artists.

Make your own animation using some wacky props and paper cut-outs! These animation workshops offer children and families the opportunity to spark a new shared interest, hone the ability to tell a simple story, and even learn to fly!

Workshops include:

  • Pixilation - Get animated! Choreographed by the instructor, you will glide, disappear and fly through the air. This is a great introduction to special effects and stop-motion animation.

  • Objects in motion - Using everyday office and school supplies, kids will animate objects in new, interesting and imaginative ways.

  • Cut out animation - A variety of pre-fashioned and cut-out materials will be used to create characters and sets. In small groups, using video capture techniques, attendees will be taken through the steps of creating a short animation.

Free parking will be available starting at 4 pm and accessible washrooms are on site. Bring a blanket, some snacks and enjoy the show under the stars! Follow our event on Facebook so you can stay updated on all announcements!

PLEASE NOTE:

Seating in Ron Basford Park's amphitheatre is on a first come, first served basis, and no reservations are required to attend the outdoor screening. To secure a great spot, we recommend arriving by 8:15 pm. The film will start after the sun has set (approx. 9:15 pm). RSVP'ing does not guarantee a reserved seat in the park.

Why RSVP to this FREE, public event?

In the event of rain, we will move the screening inside Performance Works, where we'll have a seating capacity of 300 people. Priority seating at Performance Works will be given to those who RSVP on Eventbrite.

By RSVP'ing, you will also be entered to win a Family Pass to the 2019 Reel 2 Real Film Festival for Youth. We look forward to seeing you there!
