Event description
Join hua foundation and the City of Vancouver for a conversation on ethnocultural community engagement and BBT.

About this Event

In collaboration with the City of Vancouver, Race x Democracy - Volume 1 is a public event hosted by hua foundation to share experiences in engaging with our communities on civic issues. As part of hua foundation’s Race & Equity Project, this event contributes to a much needed conversation on ethnocultural community engagement and empowerment in the Vancouver region.

The evening will begin with a presentation by Andy “the Duke of Data” Yan, the director of The City Program at Simon Fraser University, on the demographic and language changes throughout Vancouver’s history. The presentation will spark insights into how we perceive ourselves as a City, and the degree to which language impacts how different communities interact with the City.

Drawing from hua foundation’s immediate community, the presentation will be followed by a panel of community storytellers, engagement specialists, and public engagement nerds who have found success in bridging their bi-cultural lived experiences with their professional lives. With mindful consideration of specific cultural nuances and differences, the panel will explore how to bring equity to how we work with and engage with language communities and cultural communities. Insights shared on developing best practices on engaging communities of Chinese heritage - including Cantonese and Mandarin speaking communities - will shed light on how cultural specific and tailored approaches are needed to provide equitable access to civic participation.

Panelists:

  • Amelia Huang, community engagement consultant
  • Chris Cheung, urban issues reporter at The Tyee
  • Staff member from the City of Vancouver’s Chinatown Transformation Team

The panel will be moderated by Jackie Wong, director of hua foundation’s Race & Equity Project.

The event will close with a short engagement activity lead by Cheryn Wong from City of Vancouver’s Civic Engagement Team.

Attendees will be treated to handcrafted Bubble Tea by Mike Tan of Chinatown Tea Co. The tea will be served in a sturdy reusable cup with a City of Vancouver branded stainless steel Bubble Tea straw that guests can take home with them.
