Many Canadians can draw a straight line on their family tree, easily tracing where they've come from and why they're here. For children of immigrants, the story can be much less clear. There are often gaps missing and stories gone untold—yet these stories have value, and in many cases tell an essential part of Canada's history, particularly in a mainstream culture that may lead us to believe they don't matter.

Join Toronto author and Globe and Mail journalist Ann Hui for a special evening celebrating the launch of her new book, Chop Suey Nation: The Legion Cafe and Other Stories from Canada's Chinese Restaurants, which tells the stories of small-town Chinese restaurant owners across Canada, including the one run by Ann's own family.

The night features dinner courtesy of our friends at Jade Dynasty Restaurant in the heart of Vancouver's Chinatown, plus a keynote conversation with Ann and special guests, "restaurant kids" who grew up alongside their family's restaurants. We'll explore the question of authenticity in so-called "ethnic" foods, the ubiquity of chop suey cuisine across the country, and what it means to hitch one's livelihood to the defining feature of so many immigrant families: food.

This event is part of Hua Foundation's ongoing Race & Food digest, an event series that explores race equity through a food lens.
