Event description
Join SWCHC for an interactive discussion on racism and health for the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination!

About this Event

In response to community concerns about racism in 2018, Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC) initiated an anti-racism project with the goal of increasing social cohesion and inclusion by engaging residents of our neighbourhoods and participants of our community health centre programs in visioning and creation of community-based solutions to combat racism and discrimination. As part of this project, we would like to invite you to attend our second annual event that marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

At this year's event, we will discuss racism and colonialism as social determinants of health (the socio-economic factors that affect our everyday life) as well as anti-racism initiatives from SWCHC and a range of other community leaders and trailblazers in the city.

Here is our program agenda:

  • Opening Ceremony with Verna McGregor and Michele Penney
  • Greeting from SWCHC
  • Dinner
  • Understanding: Conversation on Racism and Colonialism as social determinants of health (panel conversation) with Suzanne Obiorah (SWCHC), Irene Compton (Minwaashin Lodge), Yusura Osman (Carleton University), and Mante Molepo (Parkdale Food Centre)
  • Music Performance & a short break
  • Action & Reflection: SWCHC and community leaders and trailblazers presenting their anti-racism initiatives, accomplishments and challenges with Naini Cloutier (SWCHC), Jacqueline Lawrence (OCDSB), Valerie Stam and Michele Penney (CAWI), Alynah Hyder Ali and Fadumo Deria (uottawa Teacher Candidates of Colour Collective), Hintonburg Community Association, and SWCHC Anti-Racism Advisory Committee.
  • Conclusion
  • Closing Ceremony with Verna McGregor and Michele Penney

All are welcome!

Chinese and Vietnamese interpretation and childcare will be provided.
