" Racist? Who, Me?" Anti-Racism Event
Event Information
About this event
Racist? Who? Me? Join us for this online event to explore the topic of racism in a safe and open environment, and learn about what anti-racism activities are happening in BC.
Our key presenters are Daniella Barreto, and Teresa Downs.
Daniella is an anti-racist activist with Amnesty Canada. She will talk about how Canadian institutions are deeply ingrained with systemic racism. There are growing calls to meaningfully address anti-Black racism in policing as well as the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 on marginalized populations, particularly BIPOC communities. Often we see technology thrown at problems as a way to solve them; for example: body cameras for police officers or exposure notification apps for COVID 19. Technology is not neutral or always beneficial; in fact, it can raise further concerns about human rights issues. We will break down what systemic racism is and how technology, if applied uncritically, may compound social disparities and reinforce systemic racism.
Teresa is the Superintendent of Gold Trail School District #74 . Over the last ten years the Gold Trail School District #74 has been working to address the systemic and personal racism, prejudice and bias that evidence shows is keeping Indigenous learners from achievement comparable to that of non-Indigenous learners. The district has made and continues to make changes to policies, procedures and practices to address systemic racism and engages in professional learning and engagement opportunities to build the capacity and understanding of all employees in the district. This work continues to evolve through continuous review, discussion and reflection on student and system data. The district is guided in this work by the First Peoples Education Council that consistently asks the right tough questions and has high expectations for the district in their effort to ensure that each Indigenous learner can and will be successful in this public education system.
Their presentations will be followed by an introduction of United Against Discrimination project , and a question and answer session facilitated by Dr. Shirley Chau from the School of Social Work at UBC – Okanagan.
