Radical Empathy: Tools and Mindsets for Human Connection

"What we’re really focused on is thinking long term, putting the customer at the center of our universe, and inventing.” Jeff Bezos

In today's increasingly complex and fast-paced marketing landscape, it is tempting to look to technology as a quick fix before truly investigating the root of a problem. While the pace of change is constant and marketers must stay abreast of emerging trends, they must not fall trap of blindly chasing the latest technology or channel. To stay relevant, today's marketer needs to be the voice of reason and pragmatism; honing their emotional intelligence, digging deeper into the ‘why’ behind trends and behaviours, and more critically examining the real problems they hope to solve.

This experiential one day class from THNK and BCAMA is designed for participants from all sides of the industry: client, media, tech and agency. Attendees will learn new skills and tools to more deeply understand the customers you serve, interrogate and work with emerging technologies, and build awareness of their own biases and blind spots to better navigate the pitfalls of decision-making.

Learning outcomes:

  • Examine problems from multiple angles to expose predictable, potentially costly assumptions
  • Complement traditional and ethnographic research techniques for deeper and more human insights
  • Practice what it means to walk in ‘someone else’s shoes’. Learn how to keep the experiences, frustrations, and delights of real people at the center of your problem-solving
  • Gain self-awareness of your own perspective and biases. Acquire insight into your own predispositions and the mindset required to understand your customer and their problems
  • Build perspective on how emerging technologies are shaping the marketing landscape and how they can enhance, not diminish, our human superpowers
  • Recognize and communicate the essence of an insight to develop trust with an audience and drive action

Workshop format:

THNK believes in interactive, practice-based learning over theory. In this learning environment, participants practice new skills on real-life topics and challenges coached by facilitation, leadership, and innovation practitioners.

We’ll use individual reflection, pairs discussion, and group exploration to keep energy high, including time for coffee and lunch. The day will run from 8:30 AM—5:00 PM.
