Description

Regional Inclusion and Integration Training Level 1

9:30am-12:30pm

This 3 hour training gives an overall for best strategies in the Reach framework

Inclusion Module discusses what Reach does and how we partner with existing recreation programs. It discusses AODA standards and addresses how to break through barriers (attitudinal, physical, and systemic) to support inclusion. Programs are tasked with looking at their existing programs and seeing where they need to go. Strategies are given for program staff to help them become more inclusive.

Differing Abilities Module looks at some of the characteristics of Developmental disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder-ASD. It then delves deeper into an understanding of what sensory needs are and how they can affect behavior. We then look at some of the characteristics of Physical disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy (mobility, vision, hearing) and follow through with tips on safe lifting practices.

Communication Module focusses on expressive and receptive language needs and the important strategies for coaches/instructors/teachers to use for maximum understanding and participation. We look at how to use visual schedules and transition supports to create routine, predictability and reduce anxiety.

Behaviour Module looks at behaviour as communication. We delve into the early signs of frustration and offer pro-active strategies to deal with that frustration to reduce behavior before it becomes a crisis. We will look at what a crisis situation look like and how staff, participant and peers can remain safe during a crisis.

Personal Care Module will focus on personal care strategies to meet the needs of each participant such as health needs, toileting, showering, dressing, mealtimes and sleeping. We will then look at seizure protocols as outline by Epilepsy Toronto.

12:30pm - 1:30pm

Attendees will have a one hour networking lunch. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please inform Lindsay Izsak of any dietary restrictions or allergies as soon as possible at lizsak@reachforinclusion.ca

Level 2 Regional Inclusion and Integration Training

1:30pm - 4:30pm

This 3 hour training is geared toward participants who have taken Level 1 regional training or who already have a basic knowledge of inclusion strategies and differing abilities.

Inclusion Module will give participants a new way of looking at all participants who participate in their program. Using a strengths based approach, we will focus on goal setting for participants so that they are challenged to their potential and given opportunity to grow on their own strengths. See the person first- say the person first language will be discussed.

Differing Abilities Module will showcase the T.R.E.E. approach to program adaptation/modification. This approach shows that by looking at each component of teaching/coaching (teaching style, rules, environment and equipment) we can make small changes/modifications to include all learners.

Communication Module will look specifically at the importance of developing effective peer communication strategies and fostering healthy peer relationships.

Behaviour Module will empower staff to use reinforcement as a way to promote positive behaviours. Building trust between staff, family and participant will also be discussed.

Personal Care Module will focus on how to support staff with toileting needs as well as sexuality and puberty.
