Book Title: Parvana's Journey

Author: Deborah Ellis

Chapters: 20 & 21

Summary of Chapter 20

One day they could hear planes flying above the camp. The children thought they were going to bomb them, but the planes dropped yellow packages instead. The people in the camp were afraid of being blown up if they touched the yellow things. A boy suddenly yelled: it’s food! And everyone went crazy running to get the yellow packages. There was a mine field beside the camp, and unfortunately, the yellow packages had landed there. Leila said that the mine field had always liked her. Parvana refused to let her go, but she didn’t listen. Then, Parvana heard an explosion! It was to late… Leila was killed by a mine in the field. Leila’s last words were: “They were so beautiful”… Parvana sat beside her dead sister and cried. She heard a woman asking who the child was and who she belonged to. Someone told her she had her brothers and sister her, but no parents. Parvana knew she had heard that voice before! She lifted the burqa to find that it was her mother.
