Audience: The ideas presented will be applicable to both Learning Support and Classroom teachers at the elementary and middle school level. Adaptable for the high school level.
Description: This research based two-part in-service is designed for Elementary/Middle School Learning Support and classroom teachers.
Session #1 (Part A on May 5th “Striving Beyond: The Reading Essentials of an Exemplary Reading Intervention”
In Part A, participants will develop an understanding of how restructuring and rethinking programming for struggling readers (and writers) can lead to accelerated gains for at-risk students. The presenters will describe how a daily, strategically-based pull-out and in-class reading intervention can make a positive difference with vulnerable students Drawing on leading educational researchers some schools are reconsidering their delivery modes for pull-out and in-class intervention models for at-risk readers. This presentation will answer the question “What is possible for students experiencing difficulties in reading?” And for this year only, the presenters will also discuss how to use “Zoom” to support students not attending school.
Session #2 (Part B on May 19th “Practical Strategies and Prompts that Bridge the Reading/Writing Connection with our Students”)
In part B of this two-session series, the participants will learn how to use effective prompting that facilitates the acceleration of reading in our students, even our most vulnerable learners. The presenters will model best practice teaching strategies that help guide and develop the independence of reading in our students. Participants will be provided with opportunities to practice and experience how to teach in a manner that facilitates strategic activity. They will also have the opportunity to watch powerful word-work in action. Over the last seven years approximately 300 students serviced by both presenters, and who were below grade level in reading, reached the average band of instruction.

3. A hard copy of the one page handout titled "Useful Prompts" - can be downloaded from this page (https://lata.ourconference.ca/index.php?Page=Workshop&code=WLTE4) or by emailing psac53@bctf.ca
