In November 2020, In Plain Sight was published documenting the findings of a review into racism, stereotyping and discrimination against Indigenous peoples in the B.C. health care system. The report makes 24 recommendations to uphold Indigenous human rights, increase cultural safety in health care, and achieve substantive equality in health outcomes. In Plain Sight calls upon the B.C. government and the health care system, in collaboration with Indigenous peoples, to improve accountability for Indigenous-specific racism, increase cultural safety in healthcare, and expand Indigenous leadership across health services, regulatory bodies and education.
Join BC HIMSS with:
- Harmony Johnson, Executive Director of the In Plain Sight review,
- Rose LeMay, CEO of Indigenous Reconciliation Group,
- Christina Krause, CEO of the BC Patient Safety and Quality Council
As we discuss how, as individuals and health information professionals, we ready ourselves for transformative change by examining BC’s history of systemic racism to propel us to inclusive, equitable, humble, and safe healthcare for our Indigenous populations.
