Event description

Description

Reconciling Ways of Knowing aims to build understanding and relationships across Indigenous and Western scientific knowledge paradigms to improve stewardship policy and decision-making processes and achieve commitments to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Its objective is to facilitate a national-scale dialogue between ways of knowing to bring the most advanced knowledge together to produce the most comprehensive and effective solutions for responding to the challenge of climate change, to protect biodiversity and our own health and wellness, to build thriving and sustainable economies, and to honour commitments to reconciliation and a nation-to-nation relationship.

Through the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, awareness has grown about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and colonialism, as has a desire to build a just reconciliation amongst Canadians and within civil society. The Prime Minister has committed to a nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous peoples. Such a relationship is more than a government-to-government relationship: it is a relationship between peoples. Accordingly, a nation-to-nation relationship involves recognition of and respect for Indigenous peoples’ ways of being and knowing. After more than 150 years of colonization, this recognition and respect are not a given.

Reconciling Ways of Knowing provides a timely opportunity to build greater understanding between the Western scientific and Indigenous knowledge paradigms, to better incorporate Indigenous knowledge into stewardship policy and decision-making processes; ensure the ability of our lands, waters, and resources to provide for us now and for generations to come; and build a relationship amongst Indigenous Peoples and Canada in which the different ways of being and knowing are equitably recognized and respected and better positioned to work together for mutual benefit into the future.
