The Process

*ALL CONTESTANTS MUST FILL OUT THE ONLINE FORM HERE. TEAMS OF TWO MUST INDIVIDUALLY FILL OUT A FORM AND INDICATE THEIR TEAMMATE'S NAME.

  1. Application - Contestants can apply as an individual or as a team (a maximum of 2 existing team members can apply together) and are open to both students and community members. All contestants will be put into groups of 4 to 6 members. Team assignments will be decided before the competition; and revealed on Friday, July 27th.
  2. Preparation - The Hacker Preparation Package will be sent a week before the competition. The Package will contain details on the hackathon schedule, campus maps, tips for winning (with interviews with previous hackathon winners), and a hacker packing list for the competition.
  3. Ideation - On the opening day of the competition, teams will be given the specific challenge that they will try to solve. Teams will get the morning to brainstorm ideas, and at lunch there will be a Design Thinking Workshop to help critically analyze the solutions. Following the workshop, there will be on-site mentors to hear what the teams have thought of, and provide their insights.
  4. Presentation - The hackathon is 24 hours, and will conclude at 11:00AM on Day 2. The teams will then present at the Demo Judging Session. Teams will get 5 minutes to pitch their idea, followed by a 5 minute question period. The first, second, and third place winners will be decided by our judges using the marking scheme (you can find this information in the Terms and Conditions / in the Hacker Preparation Package).

The Problem

With the rise of e-commerce and changing consumer habits, it’s no secret that brick-and-mortar retail is a high-stakes business. And, although it seems as if e-commerce has taken over; Canadian and US consumers do approximately 91% of their total shopping in physical stores. Technology transformation can allow brands to evolve, bringing forth more and more retail focused start-ups who taking the challenge to help retailers bridge the gap between digital and physical commerce through features including shelf-stocking robots, augmented reality displays, and opportunities in AI to deliver personalized, customized and localized experiences to delight customers.

2018 is the year of Technology Transformation. This is where RE:ENGINEERING RETAIL comes in.
