2021 Call to Arms Lecture Series: Lecture 1
Reflections on the use (and abuse) of maple leaves in Canadian heraldry.
The Royal Heraldry Society of Canada, Toronto Branch is pleased to announce that our first lecture in this year's three-part series will be hosted on Zoom, the evening of February 17, 2021 at 7:00 pm EST.
We are honoured and fortunate to have Dr. Samy Khalid, Chief Herald of Canada, as our inaugural lecturer this year. He will be taking us on a journey as he "reflects on the use (and abuse) of maple leaves in Canadian heraldry".
ABOUT THE LECTURE
Since the adoption of the National Flag, and perhaps long before, the maple leaf has become Canada's quintessential emblem. How has it been used in Canadian heraldry and how do the present-day heralds avoid making it an overused and all-too-common symbol? This presentation will showcase old and more recent heraldic designs featuring maple leaves, and will provide a glimpse into the Canadian Heraldic Authority's best practices in expressing Canadian identity.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Samy Khalid was appointed the third Chief Herald of Canada in 2020, after having been Saguenay Herald since 2014 and acting assistant director of the Canadian Heraldic Authority since 2019. His prior career experience includes working as a translator, editor, consultant, policy analyst and manager, both in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. He was until recently the editor-in-chief of Le Chaînon, a magazine dedicated to history, genealogy and heritage. Dr. Khalid holds a Doctorate in History from the University of Ottawa, with his research focusing on the construction of Canadian identity.
