Description

FREE EVENT - Join us for a night of stories and inspiration from the team of Seize Change, who sailed around Vancouver Island in a Catalina 27 this summer to raise awareness of marine debris. Having never sailed before this journey, the Australian couple who completed the journey have many stories to share about their 2.5 month adventure.

Aside from just wanting to learn how to sail, they wished to complete the journey with a purpose, and thus with some enthusiastic Canadian friends developed the project Seize Change. Their aim is to re-frame the face of adventure, and inspire others to be stewards of the earth as they venture into the outdoors.

The team of Seize Change have used this trip to raise awareness about marine debris by doing the trip without using any single-use plastics, conducting outreach events at schools and other public venues, participating in beach clean-ups, and performing data collection as citizen scientists. This important citizen science component includes collecting plastic samples for the Applied Environmental Research Laboratories (AERL) at VIU, conducting marine debris accumulation surveys for NOAA and the Rugged Coast Research Society, and reporting any marine mammal seen through the Whale Watch App.

The duo will talk about how they reduce single use plastics on their sailboat, as well as how they have been doing it at home for 3 years!

Check them out at www.seize-change.org

This evening we will also be joined by the Zero Waste Emporium, who sponsored Seize Change with delicious, nutritious plastic-free food this Summer!

There will be prizes and refreshments! This is a child friendly event
