Description

Kingston program logosWho We Are:

The Refugee Sponsorship Support Program (SSP) is an initiative of The Refugee Hub. Its aim is to harness the incredible energy of Canadian sponsor groups and pro bono lawyers in order to bring refugees to safety in Canada, faster. By connecting dedicated volunteer lawyers to private sponsors, the program helps mitigate the challenges of a complex and technical private refugee sponsorship application process. The SSP is a program of the uOttawa Refugee Hub.

The Refugee Hub delivers core programming in the area of refugee law & policy, and supports, promotes, celebrates, and brings together the many refugee law & policy initiatives at the University of Ottawa, including the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program.

What Private Sponsorship Is:

The Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program (PSR) is a unique program that allows community groups and community members to private sponsor refugees to Canada, and to support them in their first year after arrival. Since the inception of the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program, over 200,000 refugees have been privately sponsored to resettle to Canada.

Why We're Coming To Kingston:

The energy of Canadians to respond to the global refugee crisis is increasing. Interest in private refugee sponsorship has been growing across Canada. We at the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program (SSP) train and support lawyers who then provide support to Canadians in private sponsorship applications.

The SSP is seeking to recruit and train volunteer lawyers of any background. We will offer in-person training in private sponsorship delivered by the Refugee Sponsorship Training Program (RSTP) as well as online support and additional training for those who cannot attend the training or need a refresher. As a key program activity, the SSP matches lawyers to sponsor groups to support them throughout the application process. In addition, the SSP offers support to SSP lawyers with expert lawyers, who are professionals in refugee and immigration law and are available for review and consultation. Thus, we are also seeking to recruit expert lawyers (immigration and refugee lawyers) to add to our roster. The SSP also welcomes lawyers who have volunteered with us in the past.

The schedule for the day will be as follows:

9:30am - 12:15pm : Lawyer Training

12:00pm - 1:00pm : Lunch break (provided)

1:00pm - 3:00pm : Simultaneous sessions: 1. RSTP information session to sponsors 2. SSP lawyers working one-on-one with sponsors

3:00pm - 4:30pm : Intake meetings for new sponsors (from information session)

**Note: If you are only able to attend a portion of the day, please let us know by emailing the SSP National Coordinator Anne-Marie Belanger McMurdo at annemarie.belangermcmurdo@refugeehub.ca or refugeessp@uottawa.ca.
