Refugee Awareness for Inclusive Communities – Public Workshop
In partnership with Edmonton Public Libraries, the Centre for Race and Culture presents "Refugee Awareness for Inclusive Communities." This 3-hour public workshop provides community members with accurate and comprehensive information about refugees and refugee resettlement by: supporting individuals and organizations in understanding the pre-migration experiences of refugees, offering practical tools for working with refugee families, and providing ideas for creating welcoming and inclusive environments that ensure sustainable and successful resettlement of refugees and other migrants in Alberta.
Topics include: migration pathways and the refugee experience; basic facts and figures on refugees and refugee resettlement; UNHCR and Canadian refugee resettlement programs and processes; and finally, practical tips for working with refugee families.
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe refugee pathways and the global and historical contexts to the most recent resettlement efforts
- Identify barriers and opportunities when working with refugee individuals and families
- Use reflective and analytical tools to build inclusive and equitable practices for refugee individuals and families
