Event description
Join us at our fall fundraiser to explore a new way forward in work, in life, and in building a community of care, equity, and compassion.

About this Event

Work often takes up the bulk of our days, but the frenzied intensity with which many of us are asked to work can be at odds with how we wish to spend our lives. Many of us are juggling many things. And we’re struggling to find more space in our days. We want more time for the stuff that makes a life—like non-work stuff and the messy, complex, joyous stuff—that doesn't fit neatly into a 40-hour weekly schedule.

Over the past year, hua foundation has been undergoing an internal process of getting right with ourselves. We’ve been curious about the culture of burnout and overwork that is part of so many workplaces—and we’re especially interested in how this is experienced by the diasporic communities of colour at the heart of hua’s communities. We’re keen to embody a new way forward that embraces, lifts up, and protects our mental and physical health, honours our ability, and acknowledges the limits of our capacity. To us, these are essential ingredients to today's working life, and particularly for the people and organizations like ours that work towards equity. But we don't see them as often we need to. We must find ways to embody and put into practice, personally and organizationally, the equity and justice that we're striving towards in the wider world

We’re eager to share what we’ve learned so far on this journey. Join hua foundation at our fall 2019 fundraiser to explore a new way forward in work, in life, and in building a community of care, equity, and compassion.

The night features an inspiring discussion with guest speakers about how work has shaped them, and how they are actively shaping a new reality in work. Speakers include hua foundation’s executive director Kevin Huang, Race & Equity Project director Jackie Wong, and other members of our community.

Your ticket includes a multi-course dinner at Floata Seafood Restaurant, located in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown.

We've had a working relationship with Floata Seafood Restaurant since our Shark Truth days. In 2016, we partnered with Ocean Wise to bring sustainable seafood options to Floata's menu, including the Sturgeon dish that will be served at the fundraiser. The Chicken Soup, Buddha's Feast, and Sweet Soup are dishes from our recently released dried goods guide. Copies of the guide will be available at the fundraiser. The custom menu for the fundraiser is inspired by work from our food security initiative, the Choi Project, that has grown beyond beyond just greens.
