Event description

Description

PLEASE NOTE: This is a 3-week workshop series and will run on 3 consecutive Thursdays - May 30, June 6, and June 13.

Relocal creates unique experiences to spark connection, joy, and meaningful relationships in Vancouver - for locals, by locals.

Each Community Series is carefully designed to facilitate authentic and long-lasting connections between participants, friendly local businesses, and Vancouver’s beautiful environment. We move in small groups, at a gentle pace, to encourage deep conversations and personal rejuvenation. We meet in person over several weeks, and continue sharing support in a private online space, because we know true bonding takes time. Join our community!

PATCHWORK, PLACEMAKING & BUILDING A SENSE OF HOME
with Art Therapist, Shauna Kaendo

Week 1: In-studio - Create a textile piece that explores our sense of place and home.

Week 2: In-studio - Finish textile piece (above). Slow-stitching takes time!

Week 3: Outside - Meet in Stanley Park to walk and forage objects that feel meaningful when considering our sense of home and the supports that we would like. Gather to sit, enjoy our surroundings, and incorporate our found objects into our textile pieces.

Bonus: 4 week access to private online community space to share resources and inspiration.

Come for the activity. Stay for the community.

While we relax through fun art activities, we will also chat about our interests, challenges, and dreams. Past Relocal attendees share that these chats are their favourite way to connect with like-minded people and to build a sense of community.

THINGS TO KNOW

The event is open to adults aged 18+. All materials are included, and no experience with art or art materials is required! Groups are small, usually 5 people. They are also generous, warm, and supportive. The first two weeks will take place indoors at Hey Shauna Studio. The last week will take place outdoors at Stanley Park - rain or shine - so please dress appropriately for the event.

ABOUT YOUR RELOCAL GUIDE

Shauna Kaendo is an art therapist (Vancouver Art Therapy Institute) and mixed media artist (BFA from Emily Carr). Art therapy is a sum of everything she loves about art and art-making, in many ways – but in large part because of its potential for community and resource building. The possibilities around well-being, collaboration and community-building by way of active self-care, peer support and connection, and creative expression. Her personal approach to art-making and art therapy is grounded in an emphasis on process, play and exploration of materials. And the belief that we all have the potential (and capacity) to make change in our lives, and to create more balance amidst our whirlwinds.

ABOUT ART THERAPY

Art therapy is the intentional use of art-making to create an opportunity to express and better understand our emotions and our needs, and to create and nurture balance and well-being, within a space that is facilitated by an art therapist. It is grounded in the belief that creative process and self-expression help us to find ways to cope, to manage stress, depression, anxiety, mental health issues and a myriad of other un-eases that trip us up in our daily lives. It gives us the space and opportunity to express ourselves without judgement or expectation.
