EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
USA 1990 105min. PG
Directed by Tim Burton
Starring Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Weist

Tim Burton’s most beloved — and arguably most personal and accomplished -- movie is a darkish suburban fable about a misfit boy (Johnny Depp) with scissors for hands, a Cure clone-band hairdo and a doe-eyed demeanour just begging to be crushed beneath an uncaring and conformist world. No wonder it packs such an immediate and direct emotional wallop despite the abundant flights of fantasy, eccentricity and sheer oddball visual design on display. It’s really a movie about trying to fit into a world that has no room for anyone who needs to try so hard in the first place. And the poignancy comes from the fact that, in Edward’s state of earnest and almost-mute alienation from the world, he’s an all-purpose metaphor for those who seemed condemned to experience the world constantly from the outside, and who is ultimately too vulnerable, fragile and just plain different to function in what we insist on calling ‘the real world”. In this sense, Edward Scissorhands has an almost universal appeal for anyone who’s ever woken up, looked out their bedroom window and wondered ‘How did I get here?’ At once sentimental and critical, sweet and sour and dreamy but dark, it’s a movie that strikes that highly delicate and magical balance between contemporary fairy tale and neo-gothic horror story. - Geoff Pevere
