Event description

Description

Do you have a household item that is broken and needs repairing? Maybe you have a blender that isn’t blending, a lamp that won’t light up, a chair with a broken leg or an item of clothing that needs mending. Visit the Repair Café and one of our volunteers will assess your item and try their best to fix it.

Repair Cafés bring together people with items to repair and volunteer fixers willing to share their skills and tools. They inspire people to repair items as an alternative to just throwing them away. All you need to do is show up with your broken item and any replacement parts your repair might need.

Items that are commonly repaired include:

  • Small electrical appliances
  • Clothing
  • Housewares
  • Bicycles
  • Toys

House rules:

  • Registration is mandatory.
  • There is a limit of one item per registered guest.
  • The work carried out in the Repair Café is free of charge on a voluntary basis by the fixers at hand.
  • Visitors offering broken items for repair do so at their own risk. Experts making repairs offer no guarantee for the repairs carried out with their help and are not liable if objects that are repaired in the Repair Café turn out not to work properly at home.
  • Fixers are entitled to refuse to repair certain objects at their own discretion.
  • Fixers are not obliged to reassemble disassembled appliances that cannot be repaired.
  • Visitors to the Repair Café are solely responsible for the tidy removal of broken objects that could not be repaired.
  • New parts or materials required for a repair shall be provided by the visitor.

To register, please select a time slot. There are three time slots available: from 1 to 2 pm; from 2 to 3 pm; and from 3 to 4 pm. Each time slot has a maximum of 10 registrants. Customers in each time slot will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. The time it takes to repair an item will vary depending on the type of item, the type of repair needed and the number of volunteer fixers. Please be prepared to wait.

Richmond Hill Public Library's Repair Café is offered in partnership with York Region, which has been offering Repair Cafés in collaboration with towns, cities and libraries throughout York Region since 2017. For more information please visit the York Region Repair Café website.
