Description

Facilitating knowledge exchange between the research and policy communities

Guest lecture by Dr. Ron Saunders, introduction by Professor Barry Goodwin.

Why is it important for researchers and policy officials to be engaged with each other? How can knowledge exchange be integrated into the research and policy processes? And what factors affect the uptake of research by the policy community?

Join special guest Dr. Ron Saunders as he discusses these important questions for the policy community. As a consultant in the field of knowledge transfer and exchange, an Adjunct Scientist with the Institute for Work & Health, and as a former member of the OPS where he was Assistant Deputy Minister of Policy, Communications and Labour Management Services in the Ministry of Labour, Dr. Saunders has a unique perspective on facilitating knowledge exchange with a variety of stakeholders.

Dr. Ron Saunders

Dr. Ron Saunders is a consultant in knowledge transfer and exchange (KTE). He retired at the end of 2017 as Director, KTE and Senior Scientist at the Institute for Work & Health (IWH) but currently holds an appointment as Adjunct Scientist with IWH.

Saunders joined IWH in 2008. He helped strengthen the Institute’s integrated KTE model, which provides for multiple types of engagement with stakeholders throughout a research project. He played a key role in deepening IWH’s relationships with its stakeholder networks. Saunders also participated on numerous research teams, with a particular focus on research related to vulnerable workers in the context of occupational health and safety.

Before joining IWH, Saunders was Vice-President, Research, at Canadian Policy Research Networks (CPRN), where his work centred on vulnerable workers, the school-to-work transition, access and quality issues in post-secondary education, and skills development and training. Prior to that, he spent 17 years in the Ontario Public Service, most notably as Assistant Deputy Minister of Policy, Communications and Labour Management Services in the Ministry of Labour.

Saunders also spent time in academia, teaching at the University of Toronto and the Queen’s University School of Policy Studies. He currently holds an appointment as Associate Professor in the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, U of T. He is also on the faculty of the Knowledge Translation Professional Certificate program offered by the Learning Institute of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
