Research projects are becoming increasingly complex and multi-faceted. Researchers are expected to manage collaborators, funding, deadlines, equipment, experiments, data analysis and scientific writing to answer research questions. All the while, researchers are pulled in a myriad of directions as projects and responsibilities shift and change direction.

These problems are not unique. Many complex project face similar challenges. However, these projects often benefit from the experience of project management professionals who have been trained to manage complex projects. The tools and resources used by project managers can help you initiate, plan, execute, control and close a research project and achieve your objectives, be that a grant, manuscript, or thesis.

Presenters:

Aisha Shamas-Din is a Project Manager at Roche where she manages and executes strategic initiatives to streamline complexity and improve operational efficiency. Prior to Project Management, Aisha had a career in scientific communication creating content for the industry, hospitals, and small businesses. Aisha holds a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Health Sciences from McMaster University.

Andre D’Penha is a project management professional with over fourteen years of experience in the Canadian healthcare, retail, and automotive industries. As UHN’s Data Science Program Manager, he is enabling UHN to become an insight-enabled and data-driven Learning Health Organization. Andre has won numerous awards, including the 2015 PMI Award for Project Excellence, the 2017 Business Transformation & Operational Excellence Award for Best Achievement of Operational Excellence in Healthcare, and the 2017 3M Health Care Quality Team Award.

Zahraa Mohammed-Ali received her PhD in medical sciences from McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada. She then completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute before joining the Clinical Chemistry training program at the University of Toronto where she is now a fellow. During her PhD, Zahraa completed a project management certificate from the University of Toronto and has developed a keen interest in implementing project management tools in research projects.
