Description

The Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging at the University of Calgary presents:

Resilience in Aging: Exploring people, places, and policies

The two-day event is free and open to the public, researchers, clinicians, policy makers, and anyone interested, or invested, in aging and resilience in older adults. The forum will host world-class leaders in gerontology, and will explore what resilience looks like, what it means to older adults, and the roles that community and policy can play in enhancing resilience across the aging population.

What’s in store:

Monday, Oct 2, 6:30 - 8:30 pm - PUBLIC TALK AND RECEPTION featuring DR JANINE WILES (University of Auckland) Resilience in older age: What can we learn from older people?

Tuesday, Oct 3, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm FULL DAY EVENT featuring a keynote presentation by DR ANDREW WISTER (Simon Fraser University) Resilience in the Face of Multimorbidity: Why some individuals adapt to adversity better than others

Panel and concurrent sessions will further explore several dimensions of resilience and aging in relation to people, places and policies, including:

  • Resilient people and communities: Multidisciplinary perspectives on promoting resilience
  • Aging-in-place and technology
  • Resilience in long term care settings
  • Caregivers: Deconstructing policy dependence on informal networks of care
  • "Our place": An intergenerational community gardening and horticultural therapy program
  • Innovative, place-based interventions to prevent and address late life homelessness
  • Resilience and Age-Friendly Cities

Both events will take place at the University of Calgary's Alberta Room, and both are free of charge. The Alberta Room is in the Dining Centre - 102D, 124 University Gate NW

This venue is wheelchair-accessible. Please contact bscoa@ucalgary.ca or call 403.210.7208 if you require support in relation to a sensory disability.
