Event description

Description

Join us at the Causerie for an exchange of dialogue (through a speaking circle) on restorative justice: the practice of reconciliation between those who have harmed & the victims of harm with an emphasis on putting relationships and impact first.

With the support of a trained facilitator – Liz Pfisterer – join us for an information session and circle discussion to follow on the role restorative practice can play in reducing reoffending and the current use of restorative justice with those who have sexually offended in our local community.

WARNING: this content is challenging to hear and could be triggering. Ask yourself before signing up two questions:
1) do I want to be in this space?
2) am I ready (from a personal lens) to be in this space?
You know what you need best: listen to yourself and take care of yourself! Processing with the facilitator one-to-one will be available after the discussion, and space to step out for a breather is always an option.

We will provide coffee, tea, and refreshments for this event. Vegan & gluten-free options always available.

Marit Collective focuses on creating spaces for thoughtful discussion that allows us to listen, learn, and connect across perspectives. We expect all attendees to engage respectfully with the topics and with each other but our events cannot be considered “safe spaces”. We are committed to inclusion, understanding, and making sure everyone present has a chance to contribute their thoughts (if desired).

ABOUT OUR FACILITATOR:
Liz Pfisterer is a KW local. She has always enjoyed getting to know people from different walks of life and engaging with her community in a variety of capacities! Liz is going into her final year of Social Development Studies and Psychology, specializing in cultural studies, social action and social policy and social work at the University of Waterloo. She has been mediating at Community Justice Initiatives for two years & is working toward her Conflict Resolution and Mediation Certificate through Conrad Grebel University College. Liz has completed her Peace Circle Facilitation Training Certification and a Transformative Mediation Training Certification. Both have set her up with a variety of conflict resolution and interpersonal skills. She has been facilitating a men’s circle through Community Justice Initiatives through their Revive program for almost a year – a program that supports those impacted by sexual harm – and completed her Revive Facilitation Certification last summer. Through her work with teenagers in the care of the welfare system and working in an emergency shelter, she has developed a passion for engaging all angles of her community in the difficult discussions, through creating spaces where healing and emotions can evolve and be validated. When she isn’t working and spending time volunteering, she loves trying out different local ciders and filling a room with her infectious cackle.

ABOUT US:
Marit Collective is a social organization that encourages a culture of depth and thoughtfulness through exploring personal insight and human connection. We create space for respectful discussion and consciousness-raising within our own groups and community, working at the personal level to foster more empathy and awareness of each other. We believe that individual shifts in understanding can lead to larger societal evolution in an increasingly polarized world.

Our new home, the Causerie, is a place to listen, learn, and connect across perspectives. With this space, we are working to build a community centered around thoughtful discussion & deeper consideration of complex issues through sharing ideas and personal points-of-view.
