What is restorative yoga?

Restorative yoga is a practice that involves supporting the body with a variety of props (blankets, bolsters, straps, blocks) and completely relaxing into poses for several minutes at a time. The body moves gently through all ranges of motion like backbends, forward folds, twists, inversions while being 100% supported, which allows you to be totally mindful of the breath in a relaxed, yet aware state. In restorative yoga, the emphasis is on being, not doing.

One of the biggest benefits of restorative yoga is that it stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), or our "rest and digest" response in the body. Most of the time we spend our day in "fight of flight" mode. By actively stimulating the PNS, we can bring our bodies better into balance and condition ourselves to becoming more relaxed, calm and composed throughout the day.
