Description

FREE OPEN LECTURE

Brent Metcalfe, editor of New Approaches to the Book of Mormon, will discuss the historical accounts of Joseph Smith and the golden plates, the creation of the text of the Book of Mormon, and its publication. Witnesses described the process Smith employed to "translate" the golden plates as similar to his previous career as a treasure seer. By placing a "seer-stone" into his hat and putting his face in the had (to eliminate physical light), Smith would use the stone like a spiritual medium and then dictate the text orally. Metcalfe will discuss the implications of this performance for the text of the Book of Mormon as we have it today.

The presentation ends around 9.00. The exchange of ideas usually continues until 10, or even later, while we share complimentary snacks and beverages.

Free. There is no cost for this event but donations ($5 suggested) are greatly appreciated.
