About this event

Get to know some of the winged wonders of the rare grassland and savanna habitats of the Rice Lake Plains! Participants will meet at Hazel Bird Nature Reserve and be grouped into teams along with a knowledgeable leader and assigned a specific area of the Rice Lake Plains to survey for the count. Physical activity will include walking approximately three kilometres over uneven terrain.

Provisions

  • Moderate fitness level is required.
  • Event will include approximately three kilometres of hiking on uneven terrain.
  • A portable toilet will be available at the Hazel Bird Nature Reserve for use before and after the event.
  • All tools will be provided by NCC.
  • Water and snacks will be provided.

Equipment to bring with you

  • sturdy closed-toe shoes you don’t mind getting muddy
  • layers of long clothing (long-sleeved shirt, long pants, sweater)
  • hat with a brim
  • raincoat and rain pants (just in case)
  • water bottle
  • lunch/snacks
  • sunscreen/bug spray
  • any necessary medications
  • optional: binoculars, butterfly field guide, phone with iNaturalist app

No previous experience is required. This event will be rescheduled to Saturday, June 24 if conditions are rainy or windy. We will notify you at the email address and phone number you provided during registration if we need to cancel.

To allow us to plan for a safe, successful and enjoyable day in the field together, all participants must register in advance of the event. As space is limited and spots fill up fast, register today to confirm your attendance.
