Event description
RICECAKE is Vancouver's premier event featuring incredible Queer Asian DJs and entertainers!

About this event

Join us for an evening of celebrating queer asian art, community and expression. The RICECAKE Showcase features music and drag performances by Shay Dior, Bella, Kara Juku, Skim, Valak, Dol of Siam, and HainafromChina.

PERFORMERS

Shay Dior: Mother of the House of Rice, an all Asian drag family in Vancouver, Shay Dior has led an incredible drag career performing locally and internationally, while strongly advocating for queer Asian visibility in the community. Shay Dior is also the founder and co-producer of Ricecake, an amazing queer dance party in Vancouver that celebrates and features queer Asian talent. Featured in three documentaries, the House Of Rice is an absolutely stunning and creative family chalk full of the most amazing talent which leaves no question as to why this queen is the Matriarch.

Bella: Bella is a non-binary DJ from Vancouver, BC, whose high-energy mixes are made to move you. Whether you’re tuning in live or online, expect to bop your head and move your feet - because Bella loves to drop the best beats!

Kara Juku: Kara Juku (all pronouns) is a non-binary drag artist, content creator and multi-faceted performer. They first debuted in 2019, dazzling and dipping from stages all across their hometown of Vancouver, Canada. Their performances often pay homage to her ancestral Vietnamese roots, bringing you a little closer to their inner world. In 2020, Kara was the first drag artist of Asian descent to be crowned the coveted title of Vancouver’s Next Drag Superstar and Vancouver’s Eastside Phenomenon in 2019 for their ubiquitous high-energy, high-kick performances. Kara is a member of House of Rice, Vancouver's all-queer Asian drag dynasty and daughter to drag mom Kendall Gender, a sensational pillar in the local drag community. With their hypnotically vivacious style of performance, Kara has an instantaneous gravitational pull and top tier dance moves to match; they are the one to watch. Keep an eye out for Kara on a screen, on a stage or in virtual space near you!

Skim: Skim is an emotional and unhinged being currently living on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. They have performed on various stages and venues in South Korea, Vietnam and Canada irl and online internationally. Skim is an active member of the House of Rice and currently a MFA grad student at the University of British Columbia. Their favourite things are telling people to never go to grad school and eating vegan pho, and beef carpaccio.

Valak: Valak is a sultry drag queen who loves to explore her artistry through cosmetics and fashion. Drawing inspiration from classic glamour, she aims to be the ultimate femme embodiment of modern day China. Valak was born from the House of Rice as one of the first members. Wherever she goes, the spotlights follow.

Dol of Siam: Dol of Siam emerged in 2019 during Ricecake: Songkran, the first queer event in Vancouver celebrating the Thai New Year. Despite being known for its drag culture, strong conservative beliefs loomed over Thailand, shackling Dol’s gender expression. After moving to Vancouver in 2011 and discovering the queer community, she was able explore drag and become a pop princess. Through the support of her new family, the House of Rice, Dol of Siam was reborn.

HainafromChina: HainafromChina is a Vancouver DJ, model, artist, influencer, graphic designer, stylist - a jack of all trades, that flourished during the pandemic. If you’ve been to a Ricecake event, you have definitely seen her serving iconic looks and gogo dancing! To help us get through the panini, she recently founded Normie Corp with her friends, an online collective that aims to provide a platform for local QTBIPOC entertainers. And now, HainafromChina is debuting as House of Rice’s first drag DJ!

HOLDEN COURAGE MEMORIAL

The VMF Pop-Up Patio presented by Granville Island Brewing takes place next to the Holden Courage Memorial Graffiti Wall. The wall is re-painted annually at VMF in memory of Holden Courage, a local artist, to share joy and demonstrate the incredible skill of graffiti at VMF in the hopes of building better public understanding of this globally respected, yet often locally misunderstood art form. Holden’s family is pleased to continue his graffiti legacy through the Holden Courage Memorial Fund for artists.
