The Key Ingredient for Canada’s Success in Innovation

Mr. Bert van den Berg

Director, Colleges, Commercialization and Portfolio Policy, NSERC

The world is changing rapidly: technology, evolving markets and demographics are presenting unprecedented opportunities and challenges. Innovation is central to prospering amidst these changes. Colleges, working with local partners offer a key ingredient for Canada to succeed with innovation. This presentation will explore the changing context for innovation, and the growing role that Canadian colleges play to help firms and other organizations to create products, processes and/or services to help Canada succeed.

The Dirty Little Secret about Research

Dr. Patrick Finn

School of Creative and Performing Arts /

Computational Media Design. University of Calgary & Chair, Research & Innovation, Edmonton Digital Arts College

So much has changed over the past few years. Talk of rapid and radical change is everywhere. At times it is overwhelming. The truth is simpler and less interesting. The reality is, you are already doing everything you need to do. In fact, you are probably doing too much. Yes, change is real, but the world needs you and what you do. When we talk about applied research it is not a call to transform your work. The new approaches we are talking about are a recognition of the importance of what you do, and a request for help. In this talk we explore how to approach applied research in a way that makes your work more effective and easier to manage.
