3 Workshops with Qualified Instructors in:

Tajweed, Self-Defence & Islamic Art

Risalah Foundation presents a 4 week Youth Camp that is parent-friendly. This unique camp for children ages 7 to 16 years old integrates Quran study with a range of speciality workshops from personal strength training to discovering the world of vibrant Islamic art, while building bonds with other Muslim youth within a fun and safe environment.

Parents are welcome to stay on-site at Risalah’s parent lounge to enjoy light refreshments and free WiFi while waiting for their children.

TAJWEED WORKSHOP

Dates: Monday to Thursday (July 17th, 18th, 19th, & 20th)

Time: 10:30am – 3:00pm

Ages: 7 -16yrs

Experience Level: Ability to read the Quran at an average level

Instructor: Shaykh Ramzy Ajem

Fee: $80 / Student

Workshop Description:

This introductory workshop is geared specifically to pre-teens and young teens. Participants will learn an introductory level of tajweed terminology and associated rules pertaining to the Origin of Arabic Letters (phonetics), Nuun Sakin & Tanween and Elongation.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Improve the recitation of Fatiha and small suras;

  2. Know the subtle differences between similar sounding letters;

  3. Demonstrate ability to identify and correct faulty recitation of familiar suras;

  4. Memorize the basic rules of tajweed and their terms and;

  5. Improve memorization of Quran

SELF DEFENCE WORKSHOP Part I & Part II

Dates:

Part 1: Monday to Thursday (July 24th, 25th, 26th, & 27th)

Part 2: Monday to Thursday (July 31st, Aug. 1st, 2nd & 3rd)

Time: 10:30am – 3:00pm

Ages: 7 -16yrs

Experience Level: Beginner

Fee: $280 / Student for full two weeks or $140 / Student for single week

Workshop Description:

This introductory workshop is geared specifically to pre-teens and young teens. Participants learn techniques for boundary-setting, physical strategies for dealing with standing confrontations, and practice these in simulated attack scenarios with qualified and authorised instructors.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Build self-confidence, general body awareness and self-control;

  2. Learn techniques to block, strike and kick for basic self-defense skills;

  3. Develop discipline and specific motor coordination, and;

  4. Know the fundamentals of fitness and nutrition.

Instructors:

Sr. Fatima Garsi (For Female Participants)

Fatima Garsi (aka Fati), is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer with a passion for connecting the community through athletics and martial arts and is an instructor with Sister Fit; a Health, Fitness and Self-Defence program for Muslim women in the GTA. She provides boxing/Muay Thai, stick fighting, bootcamps and nutritional counselling in groups and one-on-one.

Br. Hamid Dwyer (For Male Participants)

Hamid Dwyer is a trainer in 3 traditional Japanese styles including Taekwondo, Goju Ryu, Shotokan, as well as other forms of martial arts such as Jujitsu (ground fighting), Kickboxing and weapons/conventional self defense. Hamid has been studying various forms of martial arts for 17 years and has been teaching for nearly 4 years.

DISCOVERING ISLAMIC ART WORKSHOP

Dates: August 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th

Time: 10:30am – 3:00pm

Ages: 7 -16yrs

Experience Level: Beginner and Intermediate

Fee: $140 / Student

Workshop Description:

This introductory workshop is geared specifically to pre-teens and young teens. Participants are introduced to basic knowledge and skills in the art of manuscript illumination, motifs and geometric patterns. The workshop is led by a qualified specialist in Traditional Islamic Art with several years of experience training children in the field. Participants will work on a series of take-home paintings using a variety of mediums, including tile, fabric and wood.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Awareness of the three principle components of Islamic Art: Calligraphy, Geometry and Islamic Pattern/Islimi;

  2. Learn how to identify the different traditional painting tools and techniques used by artisans;

  3. Learn about the basic motifs and styles that reflect different regions of the Muslim World, and;

  4. Demonstrate basic acquired techniques to produce a culminating take-home project.

Instructor:

Sr. Unaiza Karim - Islamic Visual Artist

Unaiza Karim is a qualified teacher and an award-winning British artist specializing in the Traditional Visual Arts. Unaiza offers consultancy on Arts education, curriculum development and community outreach projects. Sr. Unaiza specializes in decorative arts from the Islamic Tradition. She has a special interest in Arts of the book and illuminated manuscripts. She holds a Masters Degree in Visual Islamic and Traditional Arts from The Prince’s School of Traditional Art, London. Her work has been exhibited in the UK and abroad and she has contributed to online teaching and learning resources for the Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
