Type Designers and Movie Directors: The Trials of Making Art in the Industrial Economy

Anyone who wants to can now design a typeface using a laptop or shoot movies using a phone, but it is not clear that type design or filmmaking have prospered as a result. During most of the twentieth century, fonts and films were made almost exclusively by large corporations for whom the profit motive was paramount. Designers and directors were supplied with abundant resources, but never with perfect freedom. Art often suffered as a consequence; it also sometimes triumphed. Seen from this perspective, Orson Welles and Hermann Zapf, John Huston and Jan van Krimpen have more than a little in common. All of them had to deal with what we might call the artistic-industrial complex – and all of them did so with mixed results.
